I
berg and Steve Morrow, Bruce Simat and Susan
Johnson
Absent: Dr. Jerry Beilby, Matt Hill and Dr. Tim Tomlinson
Visitor: Larry Page from Partners and Sirny
Several changes were made to the June 21, 2001 minutes.
Kay sent the revised minutes to all committee members via
e-mail.
Susan Johnson from the education department will be submitting
her report to Hal Miller. Bruce Simat represented Jerry Beilby's
area since he could not attend.
1. Music Handout: Dr. Gerry Bouma, Chair of Music Department
gave his report.
Rehearsal areas must be able to fit large instruments
(including high ceilings).
All the music rooms must be equipped with specialized
presentation equipment, including pianos and be treated
acoustically.
Office space - Private lessons are taught in a majority of
part-time faculty offices, which becomes a problem when
two or more faculty share an office. Sound transference
is a big issue when teaching in the middle of other
faculty offices.
Private lessons may have an impact in the future.
Classroom space problems - Rehearsal time is reduced
because time is needed to set up and tear down the room.
Music Academy offers private lessons to children in the
afternoon and evening (home -schooled, elementary and high
school kids). The program is separate from the music
department but they use the practice rooms for private
lessons. It would be hard to give up this program but
it could help free up time and eliminate some of the
space problems.
Nazareth Hall - It is very difficult to find rehearsal time in
the chapel because it is shared with event services.
Addressed the need for a lounge in the Fine Arts building.
Ideal Space Needs:
It would be ideal to have one classroom available for regular
music classes. This classroom would need a presentation
space for a piano, stereo and video equipment.
Due to the size of the music department, there should
be a minimum of 16 studio/offices. There are currently 7
studio/offices aiid 9 more are needed.
It would be nice to have 3 large rehearsal areas on the
same level as Maranatha stage (band, choir and rehearsal
space). It is very difficult to move big items from one floor
to the next because not everything fits in the elevator.
There is a need for 8-10 additional practice rooms.
The department chair's office should be part of the main
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS APP C.8
