PARKS, TRAILS AND RECREATION COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
March 17, 2009
Mr. Straumann asked if pictures could be brought back to the Committee on neighboring
community trail signs. Ms. Olson indicated she would be taking pictures of trail signs within
Ramsey County and bringing this information back for the Committee to review.
Ms. Hilgers stated she could take pictures of the Deep Portage Reserve trail maps in Cass County
to be used as an example as well. She stated these signs include a trail map and are
approximately 8 V2"x 11" and show the entire trail system.
Mr. Messerly questioned what the Cass County trail signs were constructed from. Ms. Hilgers
stated the signs were wood with plexi-glass.
Chair Peck indicated it would be nice to have some sort of archway or special entrance at Glen
Paul and Cleveland Avenue to the Elmer L. Anderson trail since this was where Arden Hills,
Roseville and New Brighton come together.
Ms. Olson questioned if the Committee was in favor of trail maps along the Elmer L. Anderson
trail or if they were more interested in a Memorial sign, or a combination of the two.
Chair Peck stated he didn't see it being necessary to have a sign posted at each entrance to the
trail but instead have them more strategically placed. He felt that a combination of trail map and
memorial signs would benefit the users.
Ms. Olson asked if the Committee was interested in having City contact information on the trail
signs. She indicated the City website was on the current park signs and has proven to be
beneficial. Ms. Olson explained that she could enlarge the trail map by sections and have the
Committee review the map and decide where the trail signs should be placed. She encouraged
the members to review their maps and be ready to discuss this at the April meeting.
g
E. CelebratinLy Arden Hills Subcommittee Discussion
Ms. Olson indicated the Council has tasked the PTRC with developing ideas for the Celebrating
Arden Hills event along with creating a subcommittee to assist in planning the event. She
explained this has been a great event in the past and would benefit greatly through increased
involvement from the community.
Chair Peck suggested the monthly newsletter be used to call attention to the residents the need
for community involvement for this subcommittee to assist in planning the event. Ms. Olson
stated this could be written into the next newsletter.
Chair Peck questioned what the budget would be for this event, as compared to ones held in the
past. Ms. Olson stated past events have run roughly $40,000, while bringing i approximately
g gn pp Y
$15,000 in donations. She indicated the subcommittee would have to evaluate the scale of the
event to see if this was where they wanted to be.
