ARDEN HILLS CITY COUNCIL-July 13, 2009 19
Walgreen's. The request for the additional signage for Walgreen's is also based on
the size of the building in comparison to the remaining space in building three and
the three sided architecture of the facility.
Councilmember Holden stated that the signage should be looked at for the whole
campus in the same manner that the landscaping is being looked at.
Councilmember Holmes stated that building three is not being provided with much
signage.
Mr. Keeley stated that the expectation was that the Walgreen's would draw people
to the area and the other stores would have signage on the AP pylon sign.
Councilmember Holmes stated that as a business owner she would not like this.
She suggested that Walgreen's eliminate the words "pharmacy" and "photo" from
the side of the building.
Mr. Keeley stated that he would not be able to answer this question at this time.
Councilmember Holden asked what the commitment was regarding the monument
sign and its location. She stated that the monument sign takes away from the
beauty of the development. She suggested that either Walgreen's gives up the
monument sign space or wall signage.
Mr. Wellington stated that the developer had indicated that the Chanhassen style of
Walgreen's would be an acceptable design. He also stated that they would be -
willing to come back to the Council regarding the signage on the Walgreen's
building. He also requested that the proposal be approved with the exception of the
Walgreen's signage. Walgreen's does feel very strongly about the pylon sign.
Councilmember Holden stated that she would not approve the PUD without
having the signage issue resolved.
Mr. Wellington stated that the preference would be that the application be
approved with the condition that the applicant returns to resolve the signage issue at
the next meeting.
Mr. Trooien, Wellington Management, Inc., stated that the Arden Hills gateway
sign was interfering with the signage for the plaza. The location of the Walgreen's
monument sign has been reviewed in order to separate it from the Arden Hills
gateway sign. He also stated that the increased wall signage for Walgreen's was a
better distribution of the amount of signage based on building size.
