ARDEN HILLS CITY COUNCIL-July 13, 2009 20
Councilmember Grant stated that the proposal was for more signage for
Walgreen's than he was comfortable with. The location of the monument sign was
also in an unusual place. This sign could be moved to the entrance on Lexington
Avenue.
Councilmember Holden stated that moving the monument sign to the Lexington
Avenue entrance would be acceptable.
Mr. Trooien stated that this option had been discussed with Walgreen's and they
had stated that they wanted the monument sign on County Road E because this is
expected to be the main entrance. Moving the sign further west would interfere
with the proposed sidewalk.
Mr. Keeley stated that there were also property line and easement issues the further
west the sign was moved.
Councilmember Holden asked if the Arden Hills gateway sign was located in the
City right-of-way.
City Planner Beekman stated that this was correct.
Mayor Harpstead stated that an option to the signage would be to limit Walgreen's
to two messages per building face.
Councilmember Holmes asked how the bell tower would be counted. -
Mayor Harpstead stated that the window signage does not count towards the wall
signage numbers.
Councilmember Holmes asked why the words "photo" and "pharmacy" could not
be eliminated on the building.
Councilmember Holden asked what the square footage would be if the signage
was restricted to just the word Walgreen's on three sides (the east, west, and north
sides).
City Planner Beekman stated that she would have to calculate this.
Councilmember Grant pointed out that the words "pharmacy" and "photo" were
not on the Chanhassen Walgreen's building.
