SPRING LAKE PARK POLICE DEPARTMENT
Welcome to our facility. These work spaces are useable and we are able to make it work
for us. The biggest suggestion I could make would be to wait until you can do it the right
way. Do not just go ahead and do something because you can, with a very limited budget.
It will always be better to do it right initially, rather than trying to make it fit later. Listen
to your employees, they work in this business everyday and have some great suggestions
for work space. Take a look at Elk River PD. I was impressed at their forethought and
planning.
THINGS WE SHOULD HAVE DONE!!
(In no particular order)
1. Plan for future expansion. It's cheaper and less work to do it all at once, than to add
on, and on, and on...... Don't be afraid to build in empty future space.
Z. Utilize architects that are familiar and experienced with designing police facilities.
This business has unique needs, like any other vocation.
3. Make a separate, secured public entrance. This will create a safe environment for other
city hall employees, not exposing them to potential disgruntled police customers.
4. Utilize combination and card access systems for exterior and interior doors.
5. Make plenty of storage, that is practical and easy to get to.
6. Include furniture and furnishings in your project.!!! Don't put oldjunk in a new
facility.
7. Design a property room that is near the officers entrance, so property won't be hauled
through the entire office.
8. Build holding facilities for multiple suspects. Crooks usually travel in pairs or groups.
9. Build a secure drive -in prisoner entrance.
10. Use wall and floor coverings that are durable and practical for cops, and easy to care
for. You get what you pay for.
11. Have interior office space for multiple employees, such as clerical and the squad
room, designed/laid out by a professional.
