Gates and barriers shall be openable without the use <br />of a key or any special knowledge or effort. Gates and barriers in a means~f <br />egress shall not be locked, chained, bolted, barred, latched or otherwise <br />rendered unopenable at times when the building or area served by the means <br />of egress is occupied. _ <br /> <br />D) Section 1211 MeansofEgress-Rlumination <br /> <br />Section 1211.1 General Means of egress ill~tion (emergency lighting) <br />shall be provided and maintained in accordance with the Building Code. <br />Means of egress shall be illuminated when the building or structure is <br />occupied. <br /> <br />Section 1211.2 Emergency Power Equipment. Equipment providing <br />emergency power for means of egress illumination aiJ.d exit signs shall be <br />maintained in an operable condition. <br /> <br />E) Section 1212- Means of Egress - Identification <br /> <br />Section 1212.2 Where Required. The path of exit travel to and within exits in <br />a building shall be identified by exit signs conforming to the requirements of <br />the building code. Exit signs shall be readily visible from any direction or <br />approach. Exit signs shall be located as necessary to clearly indicate the <br />direction of egress travel. No point shall be more than 100 feet from the <br />nearest visible sign. <br /> <br />Section 1212.4 Rlumination. Exit signs shall be internally or externally <br />illuminated. When the face of an exit sign is illuminated from an external <br />source, it shall have an intensity of not less than 5 footcandles from either of <br />two electric lamps. Internally illuminated signs shall provide equivalent <br />luminance and be listed for the purpose. <br /> <br />Section 1215.5 Power Source. All exit signs shall be illuminated at all times. <br />To ensure continued illumination for a duration of not less than <br />1 ~ hours in case of primary power loss, the exit signs shall additionally be <br />connected to an emergency electrical system provided from storage batteries, <br />unit equipro.ent or an on-site generator set and the system shall be installed in <br />accordance with the Electrical Code. <br /> <br />Exception: Approved self-luminous signs that provide continuous <br />illumination independent of an external power source. <br /> <br />Assembly Safety Issues <br />Page 3 of5 <br />
