Page 3 Centerville: Preserving the Past while Focusing on the Future Valuable Volunt:eers Walter and Lorraine Neu- man, residents of Centerville for 16 years are two of our commu- nity's valuable citizens, volun- teering their time and talent in various ways. I had the pleasure of getting to know them while they were preparing the Fall newsletter for mailing earlier this month. They have given many hours over the past few years and emphasized the impor- tance of giving back to one's com- munity. A delightful couple with an abundance of energy, the Neu- man's enthusiastically shared their life with me. A twinkle in Walt's eyes shone brightly as he recalled when he first met Lorraine back in November 1940 while she was wallpapering at her parent's house! When he en- countered her the second time, he knew she was "the one" for him, however, Lorraine was not aware of this at the time! Celebrating 56 years of marriage this coming January, five grown children and proud grandparents of nine grandchildren, the Neuman's are an excellent example of the "ideal marriage". There were challeng- ing times throughout their years together. Walt was away from home while he was in the service, leaving Lorraine at home with the children. They both agreed then and now of the importance of having at least one parent at home with the children. Lorraine spoke of the time she packed up the children in the station wagon ~ Newsworthy stories, upcoming events, announcements & recipes. Submissions welcomed. where Walt was stationed. A pre- determined location along some highway, day and time was agreed upon where they would meet up! Sure enough, she found him stand- ing alongside the highway, waiting for her and a car full of children screaming in delight at seeing their Dad! Sure enough, she found him standing alongside the highway, waiting for her and a car full of children scream- ing in delight at seeing their Dad' When asked of the key ingredi- ent to a successful and long-lasting marriage, both responded without hesitation. They both agreed that each has to give in to the other; never go to sleep angry; treat each other as equals; never leave the house without saying "good-bye" and never take sides with the kids. al- ways stand firm in front of them. taking your disagreements away from them. Lorraine and Walter, active at' individuals as well as a couple. cer- tainly are a fine example of suc~ess- fulliving.
