November 28, 2018
To: Centerville City Council
From: Victoria Byrne (Scott) and Jeff Schultz (Bonita)
Re: Southern Rail
This is in response to our employee not passing the alcohol sales compliance check on August 14, 2018.
We take this issue very seriously in running our business and insuring the safety of our customers,
community and employees. Due to our employee failing the compliance check, we took immediate
action by letting that employee go. We also provide for alcohol compliance training to support our
continued efforts to insure employees are aware of and comply with the laws and ordinances pertaining
to the sale of alcohol. Professional trainers from the MLBA were hired by us to conduct the training and
we made it clear that attendance is mandatory for employees to continue their employment with us.
In October we required all employees to attend one of two meetings (October 14th or October 21St)
One employee chose not to attend either meeting and was immediately let go.
As business owners we feel we have done our due diligence to insure responsible alcohol sales by;
- Providing mandatory alcohol compliance training for all employees
- Hiring the MLBA to conduct the training
- Insuring employees know there are consequences for non-compliance, as shown by our decision
to let the employee go who didn't pass the compliance check and also letting go the employee
who chose not to attend the mandatory training
- Conducting regular mandatory staff meetings that include a review of alcohol compliance
requirements
Other efforts we put forth to insure public safety include;
- Hiring a company that offers free rides home
- Insuring our employees are aware of the laws and ordinances pertaining to the sale of alcohol
and the need to comply to them
The impact of closing down the business would result in the following;
1. Two of the employees who rely on their job at the Southern Rail as their main means of income
would lose wages.
2. The four part-time employees would also be impacted.
3. It would impose a financial hardship on the business.
45
