SEWER AND WATER
Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) System
Public Works staff have been working with our tech support to upgrade software and
computers for our SCADA system. This is the system which monitors our sewer and
water infrastructure and alerts our staff when there are problems. The existing software
and computers were approaching 15 years old.
Wellhead Protection Plan
As part of work on Part 2 of the Wellhead Protection Plan we have sent out surveys to
potential well owners. A half dozen or more of those who have responded requested info
on sealing their wells. Due to this response, we are pursuing a grant, through the
Minnesota Department of Health for up to $10,000 to cover those costs and help get them
sealed. This is a great way to help protect our aquifer.
Downtown Water Main and Street Reconstruction
A Feasibility Report was presented at the last City Council meeting by Stantec and a
Public Improvement Hearing on the project is scheduled for September 11.
Water Main Interconnect
Construction of the water main interconnect as part of the Watermark development is
complete. Bacteria and pressure tests will need to be completed before the system is
opened and "live". This interconnect will be our second such facility with Lino Lakes
and makes both cities' water systems more resilient.
Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Park Reserve Maintenance Facility Sewer Hook-up
County parks staff has contacted the city requesting an extension of their sewer service to
some new office space at their maintenance facility in the regional park. The facility
would simply hook to the existing sewer line serving other buildings in the park. We
have received their SAC calculation from the Met Council. The building will create one
new SAC unit, so the city will collect that fee and the sewer bill will be adjusted
accordingly.
Water Tower Inspection
The work of inspecting and cleaning the interior of the water tower will be scheduled for
September.
PUBLIC WORKS/STREETS
Staffing
All four of our summer Public Works staff have now gone back to school. We had a
great summer and got a lot accomplished with our veteran crew, all of whom were
returning members of our staff. It says a lot about our full-time public works crew that
we had four people who enjoyed working with our folks enough to come back for more.
Unfortunately, it looks like most if not all of them will be looking to start their careers in
other industries, so we will be looking for new faces to join our crew in 2020.
