CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

Public Officials may not be involved in decisions or official discussions where they have a
conflict of interest.
A conflict can arise in many forms, typically where the official may receive a personal
financial benefit or pecuniary interest in the action. For example:
o Voting to give your property a variance is a conflict of interest because it
personally benefits you.
o Voting to lower taxes for everyone in the City (including you) is not a conflict of
interest because it is not solely personal to you.

Gifts
Public Officials are prohibited from receiving gifts, except:
o A trinket that costs $5 or less.
o Food or beverages at a reception, meal, or meeting
o Gifts between family members.
o Services or information materials of unexceptional value.
o Lawful campaign contributions.
o Gifts between members of a group who are not tied to government service.

114
