PUBLIC FACILITIES: PARKS

Existing

,

The City1s existing park facilities fulfill most of the local recreation needs without
providing a ITcity parklT per se. The City does own a 1.4 acre parcel in the extreme
southeast area but due to its location and character, it offers only limited potential.

Recreational facilities currently provided in the city are as follows:

1. A municipal outdoor skating rink is maintained by the city during the winter on
the City property near the fire station.

2. Centerville Elementary School facilities are. available for little league
baseball, softball and open field games. .

3. The City has two tennis courts which are located on the northwest corner of
the intersection of Main Street and Progress Road.

4. LaMottes Second Addition Park (1.3 acres undeveloped)

This park is actually located i,nan isolated section of Lino Lakes southeast of
Centerville lake. But, practically speaking it will also serve Centerville
residents as it is loca ted just 400 feet west of the City line.

Although these types of arrangements presently fulfill many of the City1s recreation
needs, it is evident that they cannot be counted on permanently. The municipal
skating rink will need to be relocated . when the county maintenance garage
improvement is made. These anticipated changes along with the Cityls projected
growth and a national trend toward increased leisure time and recreation demands,
warrant the preparation and implementation of an overall ~ity park plan.

Anoka County Open Space

Anoka County Open Space accounts for nearly 148 acres of land in Center.ville. It is
intended for nature-oriented outdoor recreation use such as nature study, camping,
picniCking, hiking and fishing.. The- area also serves as a conservation area and
wildlife habitat. Additional property acquisition and development are scheduled for
the future, when funds are available. Future development will include a nature
center, supporting roads and parking lots, a bridge, bath house, beach development,
shelters in the picnic area, picnic grounds and a day camp. There is currently no
I?rovision for local neighborhood facilities.

21
