City of Centerville
City Council Meeting
July 23, 2008
4. Authorize En in.~ Bering of Downtown Stormwater Improvements
City Engineer Statz stated that the City received grant funds for downtown area drainage
improvements and they have identified a project to expend those funds. They would like
to work with St. Genevieve's Church to extend the storm sewer from Block 7 to St.
Genevieve Church's pond. They are considering what may be looked at by the Baird
Group. City Engineer Statz stated that they need to start the project by doing preliminary
survey work, negotiating with the Baird Group and the Church, and applying for more
grants (for a total fee of $35,600). He added that they would be going through the permit
process.
Mayor Capra inquired as to how they can be sure that St. Genevieve's will go along with
this.
City Administrator Larson stated that, based on what Mr. John Meyer told him, the only
thing that looked like it would derail them would be making the pond a lot larger. They
were more receptive to a project that used roughly the same pond footprint.
Councilmember Lee inquired whether they would be using the pond to irrigate the field.
City Engineer Statz replied yes, the LaMotte Park fields would be irrigated under the
plan. He stated that in very high rain events there could be an overflow directly to
Centerville Lake.
City Administrator Larson stated that what is driving the urgency too is the timing. He
stated that they have the irrigation work installed in the fields this fall so use of the fields
next spring and summer would not be interrupted.
Councilmember Paar inquired about how much of the field they would be covering.
City Engineer Statz replied that he did not know at this point. He stated that, if it is not
enough water available to irrigate all of the fields, they may have to supplement it. He
added that all ball fields would be irrigated.
Councilmember Broussard-Vickers inquired whether anyone had checked on the cost of
doing an irrigation system.
Councilmember Lee replied that, yes, the cost was looked at.
City Engineer Statz stated that it was part of the budget, and they will be getting $50,000
from the Rice Creek Grant toward the irrigation system.
Councilmember Paar stated that, if to the Council does not do this, the city will have to
decide to do something else to deal with the water.
