Meeting Minutes - CC
January 8, 1992
page five

Ap~ointment of Leaal Newspaper
Mayor Buckbee noted that since June and July he has received
complaints from residents regarding concerns of omitted items in
reported news articles and items taken out of context with regard
to the Quad Press. He noted that he has not had much experience
with the Circulating Pines, but advised that he had sometimes
seen articles in their newspaper regarding Centerville. He noted
that the Quad Press instead of reporting in a matter of fact
fashion sometimes appears to try to stir up the pot with one
sided issues. He suggested that Centerville may have not been
fairly represented in the past and would like to give another
newspaper a try with regard to appointment of the legal
newspaper. He noted however that the residents in Centerville
are used to relying on the Quad Community Press as the legal
paper.

Council member Pelton advised that the Quad Community Press is
not delivering the paper to her residence. She noted that she
would like the Circulating Pines to assure that all residents
would receive the Shopper. Council member Pelton appeared to
feel that at times the Quad Press reporting style is to the point
of sensationalism and that Centerville may get a lot of the brunt
of the articles. It appeared to be her feeling that community
newspaper should emphasize both the positive and the negative.
She did note that the Quad Community Press is where the residents
expect the legals to published at this time and that the City
Council does have responsibility to contact its legal paper with
regard to corrections.

Council member Wilharber noted that the Quad Community Press is
free and is received by all residents of the City of Centerville.
He noted that the Quad may have made mistakes in the past but has
seen the same in the Circulating Pines. He noted he does receive
the Circulating Pines and there are many weeks in which there are
no articles regarding the City of Centerville. He noted that the
articles are just as important as the legal notices. Council
member Wilharber advised that he would like to see the City of
Centerville appoint the Quad Community Press as its legal
newspaper.

Theresa Berg, Reporter for the Circulating Pines, advised the
City Council that if the Circulating Pines were to receive the
appointment of the legal newspaper that the City of Centerville
would receive full coverage with regard to City articles.

Council member Dario noted that the Quad Community Press has done
a better job this year than last with regard to errors, but that
he would not be opposed to switching.

-~~
