Overcrowded and inadequate facility for current size work force <br /> <br />After the presentation, Commissioner's commented on the issue. <br />Commissioner Lund stated that you could not fit the Police Department in the current <br />facility. He also commented that the purse strings are held by the cities. <br />Commissioner Korst stated that the existing facility is inadequate and something <br />needs to be done to correct the situation. <br />Commissioner Wright stated that there would be interest in the community to build <br />appropriate facilities. <br />Commissioner Simmons stated that existing hazardous conditions must be repaired <br />or mitigated and the Commission would be negligent if it did not remedy the conditions <br />that are of a safety concern. <br />Commissioner Swedberg stated that the fiscal realities facing cities are severe. The <br />state is $4+ billion in debt and the first place they will look is to decrease payments to <br />municipalities, police, and fire aid. The City of Lexington relies on state aid for a <br />majority of their budget of which the police budget is the largest item in the budget. <br />Commissioner Pitchford stated that the Commission past and present have discussed <br />this issue many times. Finding the money is the hurdle. The safety issues and space to <br />adequately perform jobs is important to the Commission. <br />Chief Heckman summarized that the employees are seeking an independent outside <br />consultant to examine the alternatives and make recommendations so the issues can <br />be resolved. <br /> <br />L____ __ _ _ <br /> <br />5, <br />
