involvement in projects will be used craft the appropriate approaches. To
assist Centervlile in considering options, the following highlights some of
the communication and public involvement techniques that we have used
effectively in the past.

Committees
Steering committees help guide the planning process and provides a
sounding board for the consultants. These committees represent various
stakeholders in the process. They serve as local "experts' and ensure that
the results fit Centerville. Some projects utilize a "technical advisory
committee," which, as the name implies, is comprised of agency and staff
personnel who can bring critical technical information to the table that
helps identify issues early in the process.

Open Houses
Open houses held in a location convenient for the general public provide
an effective interaction forwn. Our past involvement in open houses has
included a variety of graphic presentation teclmiques, chances to provide
general comments, liberal opportunities for one-on-one conversations with
consulting team members, handouts, and comment cards for those inclined
to leave a written record of their ideas. While most open houses follow a
similar form, we constantly look for effective ways to conduct open house
sessions. During a recently completed a downtown redevelopment plan
for the City of Hastings, HKGi planners took advantage of the opportunity
to have an open house tent as part of the Hastings Rivertown Days. Nestled
between a community organization display and a bratwurst stand, we were
able to engage people in providing feedback on their vision for a revitalized
riverfront and downtown area.

Community Meetings
HKGi commonly conducts community meetings for downtown planning
projects. Conducting such meetings involves a variety of techniques from
the use of snow cards and redevelopment game boards to the construction
of 3D models. Most community meetings involve opportunities for both
small and large group, facilitated discussions. Providing neighbors with
opportunities to meet and share ideas about their community yields amazing
results. A consistent challenge in all community meetings, however, is
getting people to attend. HKGi uses both direct and indirect invitation
techniques to attract people to meeting sessions. As a result, it is common
to attract over 100 people to community meetings - 190 people attended
a comprehensive plan community meeting in Virginia, Minnesota; 175

East End Revival at the HHake Street Festival.
