On a side note, I used to be a planner in Gunnison, Colorado. Many cities in the mountains permit metal roofs on houses, mainly because of their ability to handle large snow loads and longevity. Metal roofs worked very well and do not look out of place. City of Forest Lake's Code: (K) Exterior design and color of accessory structures. (1) The exterior design and color of the accessory structure shall be compatible with the exterior design and color of the principal building except in (rural) AP, C, A, and RR Zoning Districts. (2) In the (rural) RR Zoning District, pole-type accessory structures shall be allowed to the rear of the principal building. The exterior design and color of accessory structures located between the road and the principal building shall be compatible with the exterior design and color of the principal building. (3) Pole-type accessory structures shall be allowed in (rural) AP, C, and A Zoning Districts. The color of an accessory structure located between the road and the principal building must be compatible with the color of the principal building. I believe this is a State law but don't have the specifics in front of me. This has came up in our City a few times before as well. Hope this helps!
