CHAPTER 3
WATER USE
3.1 HISTORIC WATER USE.
One of the most important aspects of any comprehensive water study is having a clear
understanding of how a City's consumers use water. With this information and accurate records
of past usage, projections can be made of future water demand. A course of action can then be
developed to meet this demand.
The City of Centerville maintains records of the annual volume of raw water pumped from its
wells, as well as the volume of water sold to its customers. These records permit evaluation of
all the components of water demand —the water used by residential, commercial, industrial, and
institutional users.
Table 3 -1 presents historic service area population and water use data for the past eight years.
The service area population for 1996 includes the Centerville Elementary School population Of
900 students in addition to the City's residential and commercial water customer population. The
inclusion of this population dramatically increases the average service area population for the last
seven years.
For the period from 1990 to 1996, the total water pumped on an annual basis has increased 289%.
During the same time, the service population has also increased. Including the school population
the service area population has increased 459% since 1990. Excluding the school population, the
increase was 257%. It appears that the entire increase in water use is likely due to the increase
in population.
TABLE 3 HISTORIC POPULATION AND WATER SgRVICE INFORMATION at
CITY OF CENTERVILLE
Total Water Total Water Pumped
Service Area Service Sold a) from Wells
Year Population Connections (1,000 gal) (1,000 gal)
1989 N/A N/A N/A 11,005
1990 447 142 8,650 11,108
1991 567 181 10,115 13,560
1992 750 239 14,257 19,870
1993 788 252 16,358 17,130
1994 852 279 22,378 23,191
1995 932 301 21,852 22,150
CWP- 260A.080 3 -1 260-080-25
