DOWNTOWN TASKS /STREET SCAPESJHERITAGEMUSEUM
Update presented by Tim Rehbine
Chairperson Rehbine stated that the downtown task group has not been real active,
although the volunteers are present at the two month meetings. Mr. Rehbine added that in
a post design team EDC meeting, there has been discussion on purchasing a 4x8 portable
exhibit that would feature one or two of the Design Team drawings. This exhibit would
serve as a constant reminder of what we are working toward. Mr. March added that the
City Council has recently decided to pursue moving the public works building out of the
downtown area: This will improve the took of Centerville's downtown streetscape.
Theresa Brenner mentioned that the idea of a Heritage Museum is strongly favored by
some residents, but strongly opposed byothers. No progress has been made on the
Heritage Museum at this time.
CHURCH TASKS
Update by Mary Capra
Mary Capra indicated that herself and Aimee Fairbrother are current members of St.
Genevieve's Parish. Ms. Fairbrother is a volunteer on the Church Task Group, and Ms.
Capra is a volunteer on the CommmmitylYouth Center Group. Together they approached
City Administrator Jim March about the location possibilities of a Community/Youth
Center. Mr. March indicated to Ms: Capra that there were not many vacant locations left
in the city that were large enough to hold a community center building. The Church of
St.. Genevieve currently owns fifteen acres of land centrally located within the city. It was
mentioned that maybe if the church donated some land to the city for the development of a
community/youth center, the church would in turn be able to use the rooms needed for the
Parish of St. Genevieve's educational needs. Reverend Father Wolter is the acting parish
priest, although he will be retiring in May. FatherWolter took the idea very seriously, but
did not feel he should be involved since he will be leaving the parish soon.
COMMUNITY/YOUTH CENTER TASKS
Update by Monica Travis
Ms. Travis stated that City Clerk Ry -Chel Gaustad and herself have met a couple of times,
and when they last adjourned Ms. Travis agreed to gather information about a large
community center currently being developed in Ms. Travis' home city of Crossby
(population approx. 2500). Ms. Travis reported that the city of Crossby was able to begin
the project because somebody had donated a large parcel of property to Crossby. This
donation along with a grant received for approximentaley $600,000 gave the communtiy
center a financial start. Along with the land donation and the grant, people also donated
money. The center has a running track, a pool, hockey rink, which all will be able to be
rented out for revenue. Ms. Travis stated that basically they completed the whole project
without having to ask for money or tax people. Ms. Travis indicated that Ms. Gaustad
does know a few places that we could apply to for grant money, and indicated also that if
3
