Other Comments
Imagine, if you will, a diligent homeowner on Peltier Lake monitoring their septic system for small leaks to
protect the lake. Suddenly, the innocent stream next door dumps 10,000 gallons of raw sewage into the lake.
Wow! About a thousand years of small leaks just went by in a couple hours! I can hardly believe this has
happened.
In 1988, I formed the Peltier Lake Association. This organization sparked the $90,000 Cleanwater
Partnership Feasibility Study in 1990 and has worked to improve the water quality of Peltier Lake,
Centerville Lake and the watershed. Much has been done, but I am now astounded that this watershed has
had such a setback. Note that I have been collecting and submitting water samples (roughly every 2 weeks)
from Peltier Lake for many years. Tests on these samples normally only measure phosphorus and
chlorophyll. However, on July 19, July 23, and August 8, I collected additional samples and asked the Rice
Creek Watershed District if they might test the water for bacteria. At this time, I don't know if they will be
able to do so. Shortly after the spill, I noticed a fishkill that seemed limited to bullheads and a few carp.
Usually there are other kinds of fish in fishkills. Could this be related to the spill? Did the sewage go to the
bottom where the bullheads are and kill them? On July 27, I collected one and froze it. I would also like to
see if there is any correlation to observed poor water quality in the past and the 8 or more other raw sewage
spills, whenever they were.
I enclose copies of the July Hugonian Sewage Spill article and a letter to the editor from the August
Hugonian (from me).
Conclusion
I am interested in the City Council's reaction. I would be happy to write or follow through on the questions
suggested if the Council wishes. I suggest the City of Centerville has more visibility pursuing the questions
than I do alone, the Lake Association alone, or the City Park and Rec Committee alone.
Sincerely,
Wayne LeBlanc
