Program Planning Committee Report for 08 -09 -2011 HRC Meet ing 4
The Committee is of the opinion that one forum a year is not the most effective
way to create a welcoming community . In e ffect, the Committee proposes to act
upon last year’s evaluation to take it to the next level and take the next step .

The Committee also discussed that there was not a solid and consistent “brand”
name for this activity. References have been made to a) F all Forum, b) Creating
a Welcoming Community, and c) Community Dialogue.

A dialogue is a conversation requiring an honest exchange of thoughts and ideas
in a safe environment free from both political correctness and a coercive sense of
having to be nice .

Suggested Possible Working Title s:
 Community Conversations on Diversity
 Diversity Series
 Diversity Learning Forums
 Diversity Topi cs Series
 Cultural Exploration Series
 Multicultural Engagement Series
 Neighborhood Dialogues on Issues of Importance

H old ing the first forum this fall would not allow us the time necessary to organize
a new planning group, plan the first forum, and execute the best program we’d
like to see. This late summer and fall would be devoted to organizing a planning
committee, and c ommittee meeting to plan a series of program/learning forums.

The HRC Program Planning Committee would provide direction for the planning
committee, as it currently does for the Civic Engagement Project and the Project
515 program.
For Further Study : One possible schedule proposal would be to conduct/host
learning forums each month/alternating months, on various topics – all of which
would have diversity at the ir core. Some of these forums would be held out in
the community where various minority communi ties would feel most welcome,
rather than at the Civic Center. (This last suggestion was made by one of last
year’s forum planners.)

Another alternative annual schedule is that in even months we would host
learning sessions on social issues, i.e.:
 Homele ssness
 Disabilities
 Ageism/senior population
 Race and ethnicity concerns
 G ay and Lesbian Civil Rights
 Sexism
 Social justice and how to be a change agent in your community
