I don't think you should back off of it just because of that.
I think you should still lead. That's your responsibility and
I think you should take a little more active role in trying to
get more people to go along with this thing and get the cost
down for everyone (inaudible).

ACTING MAYOR JOHNSON: We have done that from time to
time in the areas where some streets are being improved and
we've tried to get other streets to come in at the same time.
We've done some of that in the last year or so.

MR. HOFSCHULTE: I think that more could be done. No one
has contacted me and I didn't see anything in the paper about
what you're trying to do. All I'm saying is that I think that
we could do a better job - at the Council level - by trying to
sell some of these ideas. Once the ball gets rolling, maybe
shove it a little bit and we can get a little bit more out of
it.

ACTING MAYOR JOHNSON: We appreciate your (inaudible).

MAYOR DEMOS: (Inaudible) almost every other city that I
know of charges 100% assessments for reconstruction. We have
tried to make it more palatable by putting 25% on assessments
and 75% . . .

MR. HOFSCHULTE: What I'm saying is - if you could make
the improvement more widespread and sell the idea to more
people - I think we could get the cost down more yet.

ACTING MAYOR JOHNSON: We know who's going to lead the
next charge for street improvements throughout the City.

MR. HOFSCHULTE: This gentlemen r~ght here had to leave
because he had another commitment, but he lives just up on
Matilda on the corner and he petitioned Matilda from C-2 to
Iona Lane. Don Smith here lives right across the street from
Iona Lane to C and I think that he'd like to see the rest of
the street done. What I'm trying to say is that just doing
one block really is not the answer to the improvement in the
area. I think we ought to try to sell more of it.

MR. JOHN MILLER, 2716 Farrington Street: The reason I
want to make another comment - even though things are getting
kind of lengthy - is that I was one of the persons who was not
contacted by the recent survey and I am in favor of it. So
that throws the recent survey at least in neutral. I might
also mention that the cosmetic nature of the improvement
(inaudible) perfectly alright. I had contacted several other
neighbors in the community on other streets and they really
liked the idea. I recently went through an estimate of what
fraction of the maintenance of my home was cosmetic. It's
about ,one-third - carpeting, drapes, mow the lawn, plant
trees - and I feel a little ashamed sometimes that I don't

-10-
