0 individuals aged 85+ are the fastest growing segment of the population. <br />0 By the year 2020, 0% of our national population is expected to be age 65 or older. <br />Baby boomers are increasingly joining the ranks of the senior population. This generation, <br />accustomed to the values of choice and autonomy, will expect to have options from which <br />to choose that enable thorn to continue living independently and in their own homes. <br />'fA1 The basic maintenance /custodial supports that can assist elders to continue living at home <br />as they age are often unavailable or unaffordable in many communities — especially in <br />rural areas. <br />There is growing evidence that elders are at heightened risk for health problems due to <br />increased social isolation and the grief and depression that results from the loss of physi- <br />cal abilities and close relationships. <br />• A recent Harvard University study found that elders who actively involve themselves in <br />social activities live an average 2 1/2 years longer than more reclusive people and enjoy <br />a reduced incidence of dementia. The study also noted that simply meeting with other <br />people Haight offer as great a benefit as regular exercise. <br />Studies at the national and state level indicate that 20 to 30 percent of eiders in nursing <br />homes would not need to be there if appropriate supports were available in their homes. <br />it Upon placement in a nursing home, the average elder's income and assets are depleted <br />within 6 months. <br />Assisted living facilities are becoming more popular: but the expense of these facilities <br />its the number of people who can realistically gain access to quality care. <br />Medicare restrictions limit health care reimbursement for seniors with moderate incomes <br />and those with treatable chronic conditions, leaving significant 64gaps" in the system of <br />care <br />The health care system is designed to emphasize treatment of illness /injury and less on <br />health maintenance /disease prevention.
