PBX System <br />The City's current phone operates similar to the State's Centrex system with heavy reliance on <br />multiple business lines from the local phone service provider. This system uses interconnected <br />phone switches between each facility <br />Advantages include: <br />❑ Greater flexibility than Centrex System <br />❑ Basic phone services preserved <br />❑ Minimum Staff training for a new system <br />❑ Call stacking and queuing is available on newer PBX systems <br />❑ Greater control over long- terra phone costs as compared to the Centrex system <br />Disadvantages include: <br />❑ Nigher up -front equipment costs compared to Centrex Centre system <br />❑ Higher annual on -going costs compared to IP Telephony or Centrex <br />❑ Systems are proprietary, relying on equipment from a single vendor <br />Requires dedicated wiring system to be installed at all city facilities, increasing <br />infrastructure costs. <br />❑ Additional trunk lines needed to connect other City facilities <br />❑ Phone unit adds /moves /changes require service calls <br />❑ Multiple failure points without recovery. Does not provide for emergency <br />readiness protocols. <br />IP Telephony <br />Internet Protocol (1P) telephony is a digital - }used system that runs over existing data networks <br />With IP telephony, voice and data became integrated sharing capabilities and costs. <br />Advantages include: <br />❑ Lower annual on -going costs <br />❑ Shares data wing system, eliminating the need for dedicated phone infrastructure <br />❑ High -end capabilities using modem technologies, open architecture with <br />equipment available from multiple vendors <br />❑ Cost- effective in multiple - facility configuration <br />❑ Additional trunk lines no longer needed <br />❑ Call stacking and queuing is available <br />❑ Phone unit adds /moves /changes are seamless <br />❑ Greatest control over long -term phone costs <br />Disadvantages include: <br />❑ Nigher up -front equipment costs <br />
