Attachment 8
I
Harriet Alexander Nature Center
Masitier Interpretive Plan for Wetland Education
SCOPE STATEMENT:
(Harriet Alexander Nature Center (H NC) is designing a master interpretive plan for wetland education
along the boardwalk/trail system. This plan prepares for design of a wetland teaching platform; an
outdoor, self-iguideld interpretive walk; and an indoor interpretive exhibit which encourages use of the self-
guided walk. This community-driven project will serve to revitalize public interest in H C,, allow wetland
program activities despite water depth fluctuations, provide essential wetland education, and increase
boardwalk user safety,. We recommend that the interpretive plan be implemented in three phases:
Phasie I - Wetland Teach"Ing Platform Plan
The teaching platform will provide a safe wetland "classroom" where students experience wetland
education with a hands -ion approach. Wetland programs can be scheduled more often with the
establishment of a dry surface where children are able to reach the water, regardless of water depth
fluctuations.
Phase II - Self-guideid Interpret"Ive Walk
The self-guided interpretive walk will designate twelve liinterpiretie stops along the boardwalk, provide six
,activity stations, and encourage visits to the interpretive building. Stops and stations will be identified for
specific wetland education experiences and will be located along the boardwalk/trail system's present
footp iri nt.
Phase III - Inidolor Interpretive Exhibit
The indoor interpretive exhibit will serve to integrate and promote movement between the indoor and
outdoor elements of HANC, and to enhance wetland education at the nature center,
SPECIFICATIONS:
Phase I - Teaching Platform
a Decreases liability concerns of boardwalk use during HANC wetland programs.
* Allows program participants to safely engage in pond dipping, despite water depth fluctuations.
* Eliminates obstruction of the main boardwalk by students during educational programs.
Is located in an area where water depths are between 1, to 2 feet deep from June through
A-
September during normal precipitation periods.
Connects to the main boardwalk.
Accommodates up to 25 program participants for simultaneous pond dipping along the perimeter.
Has benches to seat 25 users.
Includes adaptations to prevent equipment from being lost in the water or sustaining water
damage.
Incorporates stable hand supports and railings for safety along edges of the station.
1 0 a&
volff"A
