Action Plan
AP 3.4 The benefits of achieving "leader department" status through maintaining or improving
our ISO rating and achieving national accreditation Will be incorporated into staff and supervisor
training and development. This Will help to sell the plan to the employees and encourage buy -in.
PRIORITY 4.
AP 3.5 A variety of communications media Will be used to gain support of our employees, our
elected officials, and the public concerning the department's ISO rating and achieving national
accreditation. PRIORITY 4.
Motivation & Morale
Employee surveys conducted in 1999 and early 2000 showed concern for the motivation of
employees and perceived poor morale among some employees. We have, and must continue to,
strive to maintain highly motivated employees and high morale among our employees. Ignoring
motivation and morale leads to mediocrity. This administration is committed to providing
leadership that maximizes motivation and maintains high morale. This will allow our employees
to operate in an environment that places high value in their contribution of making RFD the best
it can be. Enthusiastic and energetic employees optimize performance. Since January 2000,
there has been, and continues to be, a tremendous amount of change taking place in RFD. This
rate of change may be unsettling for some of our employees. While a majority of our employees
want to change the status quo, this change must be orchestrated in order to insure a smooth
transition and reduce anxiety of the employees who have difficulty adapting to change.
Objectives
• Develop and implement programs that empower employees by seeking their input on
various issues and concerns in the department.
• Continue to develop and implement programs that create an environment that improves
behaviors and leadership abilities among our supervisors and ultimately to those
employees they supervise.
• Continue to develop and implement programs that reduce the impact of the destructive
informal communications (i.e. the rumor -mill) and reduce the corresponding morale
issues that arise from misinformation.
Action Plan
AP 3.5 Maintain and update their respective areas on the FIRE WIRE monthly so that employees
can stay current on important news and information. PRIORITY 5.
AP 3.7 Respond to letters, e -mail, and telephone inquiries from employees within three (3)
business days of receipt. PRIORITY 4.
AP 3.8 Develop an employee e -mail list to use for employee notifications of breaking news and
updates.
24
