Roseville Human Rights Commission
November 16, 2011 - Draft Minutes
Chair Grefenberg moved and Commissioner Brisbois seconded motion to give prizes of $100 for
first place; $50 for second place; $30 for third place and $15 for honorable mentions and $50 to
each of the two schools. Motion prevailed unanimously.
Commissioner Groff moved and Commissioner Brisbois seconded motion to pay for the attendance
of up to four commissioners at the LMHRC annual meeting.
Attendance at the meeting is $35 per person. Commissioners discussed the value of attending and
paying for the annual meeting. Several noted that the annual meeting is not just a dinner, but it is a
networking opportunity and offers lots of education opportunities.
City Manager Malinen said it is part of training and education in the human rights area and is an
acceptable use of city dollars.
Motion prevailed unanimously.
Carolyn Curti explained the essay contest timeline, asking commissioners to submit their top three
essay choices by December 9. She said the top essays would be distributed at the December
meeting.
Commissioner Groff and Commissioner Thao said they were not available for the December
meeting.
Future Agenda Items
Commissioners raised two potential topics: essay contest reception and strategic plan.
Commissioners requested a copy of the strategic plan. Chair Grefenberg suggested that the
December meeting be cancelled since there was no pressing business and two commissioners would
not be available.
Chair Grefenberg asked that the youths make suggestions for ideas they would like to pursue. He
encouraged the standing committees to meet over the next two months.
Announcements
Chair Grefenberg reminded others of the November 29 PBS will show the documentary about Chai
Vang, a Hmong immigrant who was found guilty of murdering six deer hunters in Rice Lake, WI.
Commissioner Groff and all of the Commissioners congratulated Commissioner Thao on her
election to the school board.
Adjournment
Commissioner Singleton moved and Commissioner Groff seconded motion to adjourn. Motion
prevailed. Meeting adjourned at 8: 10.
