February 22, 2012
Item 6.ii.a
Outreach Committee
HUMAN RIGHTS OUTREACH COMMITTEE MEETING
January 23, 2012
District 7- Arden Hills, Falcon Heights, New Brighton, Roseville, Shoreview, Maplewood
District Director: District Director-at-Lare
Sam Abdullai (DL-7, 2011) Thelma McKenzie
5993 Grotto Street North
Shoreview, MN 55126
H: 651-490-7717
W: 763-506-9023
sam.abdullia@vision-ease.com
(Not sure if Arden Hills HRC is still in existent; check)
COMMISSIONERS PRESENT:
ARIANNE MAXWELL (MAPLEWOOD);
GARY, WAYNE, KAYING, JILL, THELMA (ROSEVILLE);
MARK FREY (SHOREVIEW);
GWEN WILLIAMS (FALCON HEIGHTS)
Wayne: Introductions and relays purpose of gathering all commissions today — combine resources so
that all of our commissions could partner to build bigger programs so that we could all support one
another. Not reinvent wheel. An idea would be to share training / informational sessions and resources.
Arianne: One topic of high interest is "conflict resolution"
Gary: Proposes that we all share mailing lists to inform citizens and to communicate to a broader range
of folks - advertisement of events, etc.
Gwen: expresses that if we come together, then the high numbers of participants influence City Council
and other government entities of the topic of interest, which in turn can get broader support and better
outcomes for all, leading to possibilities of integrating it into future year budget / programming
Gary: shares information about how to respond to marriage amendment
All: all commissions should all get together to script a joint position statement so that we could be more
powerful...Make the argument. Give the information. (Amendment? Registry?)
Wavne: anything else that we could do as a group?
Gwen: it would be nice to see what other commissioners' bylaws read. Gary: we're in the process of
looking at ours...Mark: I believe we might have some on our website.
