Roseville Human Rights Commission
November 16, 2011 - Draft Minutes
Several other Commissions asked questions about how the Facebook Page would operate, including
whether the public could add comments on the Wall pae. Siliciano said that current plans were not
to allow this, but that the Commission could post its flvers and events; and thus reach voung_people.

Grefenberg asked staff if this would be the first Commission-sponsored Facebook page. City
Manaer Bill Malinen responded it would be the iirst commission-sponsored Facebook pa e,as
compared to citv department Facebook paes•

Chair Grefenberg asked staff to present the completed Communications Plan to the full
Commission.

Other Items

Commissioner Kaying Thao and Carolyn Curti provided information about the movie "Not in Our
Town." The movie was about a community where some youths attached immigrants as a"sport"
and their actions escalated until an immigrant was killed. The movie looked at what led up to the
murder and the community's response. Commissioner Thao and Curti had only seen about 15
minutes of the movie. They said the movie touched on a very serious subject suggested that the
commission watch it to help plan the program and consider speakers to facilitate the discussion
following the movie.

Carolyn Curti said a planning committee is looking at two approaches to show the movie to the
community. The school district wants to incorporate into their curriculum and show it in specific
classrooms and cultural groups. The second approach would be to have the Human Rights
Commission sponsoring showing it at the public library and inviting the community to attend.

ll 9 Currently, the committee plans to include the Human Rights Commission, Roseville Police
Department and the Roseville Library, as well as considering involving other groups. They are just
in the beginning of planning and have a lot of details to wark out.

Chair Grefenbersuggested that Youth Commission Marie Siliciano also be on the planning-ou
especially relating to the high school showings of the film. He said that the Youth Commissioners
could use it as a venue for nrovidin information on their activities to their fellow hih school
students.

Grefenberg also commented that he saw the general community showings to be another pro r
the Communit.gue pro rg am aroved b_y the Commission last August. Commissioner Thao,
lead for that ro r reed.

Commissioners discussed whether the Commission as a whole should watch the hour-lon movie.
Commissioners agreed to show the movie and invite others to watch it, if they are available. Chair
Grefenber said he would not like to devote an hour of formal meetin time to it, but suorted a
showin to Commission members.
