Grefenberg asked staff if this would be the first Commission-sponsored Facebook page. City
Manager Bill Malinen responded it would be the first commission-sponsored Facebook page, as
compared to city department Facebook pages.
Chair Grefenberg asked staff to present the completed Communications Plan to the full
Commission.
Other Items
Commissioner Kaying Thao and Carolyn Curti provided information about the movie "Not in Our
Town." The movie was about a community where some youths attached immigrants as a"sport"
and their actions escalated until an immigrant was killed. The movie looked at what led up to the
murder and the community's response. Commissioner Thao and Curti had only seen about 15
minutes of the movie. They said the movie touched on a very serious subject suggested that the
commission watch it to help plan the program and consider speakers to facilitate the discussion
following the movie.
Carolyn Curti said a planning committee is looking at two approaches to show the movie to the
community. The school district wants to incorporate into their curriculum and show it in specific
classrooms and cultural groups. The second approach would be to have the Human Rights
Commission sponsoring showing it at the public library and inviting the community to attend.
Currently, the committee plans o include the Human Rights Commission, Roseville Police
Department and the Roseville Library, as well as considering involving other groups. They are just
in the beginning of planning and have a lot of details to work out.
Chair Grefenberg suggested that Youth Commission Marie Siliciano also be on the planning group,
especially relating to the high school showings of the film. He said that the Youth Commissioners
could use it as a venue for providing information on their activities to their fellow high school
students.
Grefenberg also commented that he saw the general community showings to be another program in
the Community Dialogue program approved by the Commission last August. Commissioner Thao,
lead for that program, agreed.
Commissioners discussed whether the Commission as a whole should watch the hour-long movie.
Commissioners agreed to show the movie and invite others to watch it, if they are available. Chair
Grefenberg said he would not like to devote an hour of formal meeting time to it, but supported a
showing to Commission members.
Outreach Committee Report
Commissioner Wayne Groff, a Committee member, s-a reported that he and Commissioner
McKenzie and Chair Grefenberg interviewed ve impressive candidates and by consensus agreed to
recommend Joan Dao and Kayo Kadir to the youth positions. He emphasized that it was a very
difficult decision because of the strong candidates. Chair Grefenberg clarified that there was not a
consensus on every candidates, yet he agreed to support their recommendation.
