<br />City Council Regular Meeting - 06120/05 <br />Minutes - Page 7 <br /> <br />Recreation Commission working cooperatively and making <br />recommendations to the City Council for future action. <br /> <br />Nancy Nelson; Friends of the Oval Foundation <br />Ms. Nelson was recognized by Mayor Klausing and <br />detailed the gift from the Guidant Foundation: a $500,000 <br />check to be used for repairs to the Chiller and related costs; <br />and another $500,000 in matching funds to assist in <br />building an endowment toward future improvements and/or <br />repairs, and operations. <br /> <br />Lonnie Brokke, Parks and Recreation Director <br />Mr. Brokke outlined the gift from the Guidant Foundation <br />with a check presented earlier that afternoon at a press <br />conference in the amount of $500,000 to be used for <br />upgrades and to address current issues at the Oval; with an <br />additional $500,000 anticipated as part of a matching fund <br />to create an endowment to sustain Oval and Skating Center <br />operations and capital improvements in the future. <br /> <br />Mr. Brokke presented various future options and <br />discussions in recognizing this generous gift, with <br />consideration given to possibly renaming the John Rose <br />Minnesota Oval to the "Guidant - John Rose Minnesota <br />Oval," or something similar; to invite Guidant Foundation <br />representatives to actively and prominently participate in <br />the reopening event of the Center; and possible creation of <br />an ice logo; exploration of other signage opportunities (i.e., <br />banners, a plaque, scoreboards, or ice resurfacer). Mr. <br />Brokke further reviewed future Oval considerations to <br />extend opportunities to Guidant for sponsorship/naming <br />rights for other events held at the Oval; a possible <br />advertising dasher board in the indoor arena; and hosting of <br />Guidant employee events. <br /> <br />Mr. Brokke advised the City Council that staff would be <br />providing recognition in various media sources expressing <br />the City's and citizens' appreciation of this gift. Mr. <br />Brokke noted that, in exchange for some recognition, the <br />Guidant Foundation would contribute $1 Million to the <br />Friends of the Oval Foundation (FOF) to be used for <br />
