Mayor Klausing opined that by expanding the Public Works and Transportation Commission and expanding their work tasks and focus, they could address more long-term specific environmental issues and alleviate staff time. Mayor Klausing noted that he wanted more time to consider the addition of a Business Advisory Commission, not as a potential solution, but to provide a voice and balance issues/perspectives of the business community for those business people not necessarily residential residents of the community. Again, the Council concurred that additional input and impact feedback from the various commissions would be helpful. Clarification of Commission Appointment and/or Reappointment Process Councilmember Kough spoke in support of application for reappointment. Councilmember Ihlan spoke in support of everyone applying, whether for reappointment or for new candidates for appointment, to send a message that reappointment was not automatic. Councilmember Ihlan spoke to a reasonable compromise that re-appointees not be interviewed again by the City Council unless a Council majority so dictated. Mayor Klausing addressed what criteria Councilmember Ihlan was suggesting as appropriate for reappointment to keep the process from being politicized. Councilmember Ihlan suggested that experience of incumbents, while not being a criterion for reappointment, would provide the City Council with a history of their service to-date. Councilmember Ihlan expressed faith in the City Council being able to make neutral appointments without it becoming politicized. Councilmember Schroeder likened the reappointment process similar to that of in-house candidates competing for advancement in the job market with new candidates for hire.
