Regular City Council Minutes - 5/12/03
Page 9

VII. Land Use

VIII. Reports and Recommendations

A. Update on Improvement Project for the Muriel Sahlin
Arboretum
Monte Johnson, President of the Central Park Foundation,
provided an update to the City Council on the three
proposed projects donated by the Foundation for the
Arboretum that had been anticipated for completion this
year.

Mr. Johnson stated that, given the current budget climate,
the board had taken action at their last meeting to delay
one of the three projects: the Japanese Garden. Mr.
Johnson stated that, given the budget issue, and related
maintenance personnel and equipment issues, the board
deemed it prudent to divide the three projects, and proceed
only with the improvements to the Celebration
walk/fountain area, and the front entry/parking area in an
effort to neutrally maintain, or perhaps reduce, personnel
responsibilities for the City until the budget impacts are
determined.

Mr. Johnson expressed his appreciation to staff member
Mr. Brokke for his expertise and involvement with the
Foundation in coming to this conclusion.

Mr. Johnson stated that the Foundation anticipated the
park enhancements available for public enjoyment by
August.

Councilmember Klausing expressed his appreciation to the
Foundation and Mr. Johnson for their continued
participation with the City; and even while commending
the Foundation for their prudence, expressed
disappointment in the delay of the Japanese Garden and
looked forward to its future construction.

Mayor Kysylyczyn encouraged people to contact City staff

Land Use

Reports and
Recommendations

Update on
Improvement
Project for the
Muriel Sahlin
Arboretum
