Regular City Council Minutes - 12/08/03
Page 5

Ed Hoffs, 636 Pineview Court (2 year member of the
Fire Department)
Mr. Hoffs spoke in support of the direction the Chief was
attempting to take the department; relating the difficulty of
current training schedule requirements, and conflicts with
other employment and family responsibilities; and
encouraged Council support of the Training Manager
position to achieve consistency in department training.
Mr. Hoffs noted that the pay differential was not a prime
factor in recruitment efforts of the department, but most
joined for the job, camaraderie and fun.

Terry Coleman, (3 year member of the Fire
Department), 592 County Road B
Mr. Coleman recognized how the current training schedule
cut into family time and other commitments, creating a
continual struggle; and encouraged Council direction in
order to achieve the most efficient use of firefighter time.

Eric Dixon, (3 year member of the Fire Department),
2073 Irene Street
Mr. Dixon spoke in favor of the availability of hands-on
training with a full-time Training Manager, versus the
limited hands-on available with the current training
system.

Tom Gust, (2 year member of the Fire Department)
Mr. Gust shared the expressed concerns of those other
firefighters having spoken, recognizing that the League of
Women Voters' recommendations for additional
advertising and increased pay would have budget impacts,
but that the Training Manager would not put additional
strains on the budget.

Matt Ostendorf, (3 year member of the Fire
Department), 2355 Dale Street
Mr. Ostendorf expressed his support of the Fire Chiefs
vision for the future of the department.
