<br />City Council Regular Meeting - OS/22/06 <br />Minutes - Page 2 <br /> <br />weekly meetings during the process and Mayor Klausing, both of <br />whom provided advice, support, leadership, and individual <br />contacts; City Advisory Commissions, particularly the ongoing <br />advocacy of the Parks & Recreation Commission corporately and <br />individually; the OVAL Task Force for their encouragement to <br />pursue the funding; the Skating Center Advisory Commission; <br />Friends of the OVAL; various user groups; City Manager Beets, <br />Communications Specialist Carolyn Curti, and City staff; and <br />community individuals who provided legislative contacts; and <br />Bill Cushman for his expertise and advice regarding mechanical <br />malfunctions, <br /> <br />Mr. Brokke recognized the two nine-year olds, Justin Dore and <br />Isaac Rogers, and their mothers, who provided closing testimony <br />on Saturday night at the legislature; and their impact on the <br />legislative body in gaining support for funding. Mr. Brokke <br />recognized the other young people who had supported the <br />process; the Guidant Corporation and their representatives; and <br />the many dignitaries and professional skaters and enthusiasts for <br />their continuing advocacy for the OVAL. Mr. Brokke fuliher <br />noted and thanked the legislators in Wisconsin who contacted <br />their peers in Minnesota and spoke in support of the funding; and <br />thanked the John Rose extended family for their continuing <br />support and ongoing awareness of the OVAL. <br /> <br />Mr. Brokke advised that, with the acceptance of the facility's <br />state-wide significance, staff, the Parks & Recreation <br />Commission, and the Task Force would be working to raise the <br />additional $460,000 in matching funds for the Guidant grant; and <br />would be providing an action plan for Council review, comment <br />and authorization to prioritize and complete the projects <br />previously listed and related to the OVAL. <br /> <br />The City Councilmembers thanked Lonnie for his diligence at <br />the Legislature and on the City's behalf. Mayor Klausing noted <br />the many stories related to the names listed by Mr. Brokke, their <br />involvement and their personal interest in the facility and in the <br />overall quality of life in the community. <br /> <br />Mr. Brokke encouraged Councilmembers, and the public, to let <br />staff know of any additional people needing recognition and a <br />
