Public Policy Committee
Recommendations to LMHRC Board
March 26, 2012
Recommendation 1: Issues
Voter ID Constitutional Amendment:
There is no evidence of significant voter fraud or abuse in Minnesota, according
to available information from the League of Women Voters. A constitutional
amendment, such as the one under consideration in the Minnesota legislature,
would discourage absentee ballots and is patently unfair to those individuals who
are elderly, disabled, confined to their homes or care facilities, or students
residing temporarily away from their permanent residence.
Therefore, the League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions opposes the
proposed Voter ID Constitutional amendment, which requires voters to provide a
government-issued photo identification card at the polls.
• Passed League Board ofDirectors 90-J on 3 25-202.
Bullyinq:
Bullying of an individual or groups because of their personal characteristics,
vulnerability or beliefs reflects a lack of respect for human dignity and is
unacceptable. Verbal and physical abuse, intimidation and exclusion inherent in
bullying are detrimental to healthy learning, working and living environments.
Therefore, the League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions supports efforts
and programs in all schools, businesses, faith communities, government units,
care facilities and other organizations to take positive steps encouraging respect,
acceptance and full participation for all people in Minnesota.
• Pending.
Immiqration:
The immigrants who came to the North American continent over the past 500
years established themselves and became the majority culture in the United
States. Less than 1% of the current population is descended from those who
originally resided in the area now known as the United States. Vibrant and
growing communities respect the human rights of individuals to choose their
beliefs and cultural identification.
Therefore, the League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions encourages
education, proqrams„ and activities that foster a welcominq environment for all
