<br />City Council Regular Meeting - 08/14/06 <br />Minutes - Page 3 <br /> <br />(i.e., essay contest; parade partIcIpation; representatives for <br />Black History Month; and HRC volunteering at a Senior Citizen <br />Christmas party), and noted the need for more importance given <br />to the HRC if they were to become effective (i.e., as trained <br />mediators for human rights issues). <br /> <br />HRC Staff Liaison Curti reviewed past, but rare, human rights <br />complaints brought to the City's attention, and the citizens <br />choosing not to pursue their issues further. <br /> <br />Chair Delmore suggested a specific location at City Hall where <br />the HRC could advocate for citizens with human rights issues; <br />and expressed the HRC's willingness to actively advocate for <br />Roseville citizens. <br /> <br />Mayor Klausing sought input from the HRC as to their ideas for <br />the City Council to empower the HRC more. <br /> <br />Commissioner Keeney suggested a surveyor "temperature <br />taking" of the City to receive feedback from the community on <br />human rights issues. <br /> <br />Councilmember Pust suggested that the HRC work with the area <br />School Districts, as they had demographic information and were <br />able to target some of those groups whose opinion the HRC <br />sought. Councilmember Pust also suggested the HRC work with <br />the community visioning subcommittee to connect with under- <br />represented people in the community. <br /> <br />Councilmember Kough opined that the City was fortunate that <br />there appeared to be no major discrimination issues in the <br />community, but suggested the HRC look at housing and jobs <br />related to discrimination. <br /> <br />Commissioner Venters noted that he served on the HRA <br />Advisory Group for Rental Housing, and the group was currently <br />looking into a brochure directed to renters with information on <br />human rights advocacy availability for them in the community; <br />and opined his perception that there was a higher percentage of <br />diversity in residential rental housing in the community than in <br />owner-occupied units.
