<br />City Council Study Session - 09/18/06 <br />Minutes - Page 4 <br /> <br />Councilmember Kough personally spoke in OpposItIOn, as a <br />senior citizen, questioning what would be gained by a weekly <br />pickup; and cited concerns with additional fuel for the vehicles <br />and truck traffic on City streets. Councilmember Kough <br />expressed his satisfaction with recycling as it was currently <br />handled; and didn't support single stream recycling. <br /> <br />Councilmember Pust sought additional information related to <br />balancing benefits of additional collections versus another truck <br />on the road and additional fuel used; and questioned if the City <br />could return to every-other-week collection if the residents were <br />found to be non-supportive. <br /> <br />Mr. Pratt noted the ten percent (10%) increase in materials <br />collected in the Cities of 8t. Paul and Maplewood when they <br />went to weekly collection; and advised that contract provisions <br />would allow the City to return to current collection cycles, as per <br />contract provisions. <br /> <br />Councilmember Ihlan questioned the projected additional <br />revenue in going to a weekly collection; and also whether Eureka <br />was using bio diesel fuels in their vehicles. <br /> <br />Mr. Pratt projected an additional $20,000 annually in revenue <br />with weekly collection; and noted that Eureka utilized bio diesel <br />fuel in their vehicles, and were in the process of retrofitting their <br />vehicles, and was a requirement for 2007 recycling truck models. <br />Mr. Pratt noted that Eureka was not required to retrofit their fleet <br />at this time, but was voluntarily doing so. <br /> <br />Mayor Klausing referenced the requirements of the original <br />Requests for Proposals of each firm that they provide an air <br />pollution reduction plan for their fleet. <br /> <br />Councilmember Maschka opined his support for weekly <br />collection, with another staff report in six months showing <br />results of more frequent collection. <br /> <br />Mr. Pratt advised that, in accordance with terms of the contract, <br />Eureka needed to be notified by November I in order to purchase <br />
