City Manager Malinen <br />52 said he would check to see if that was allowed. <br />53 <br />54 Forum on R�ce/Diversity Training <br />5� Commissioner Venters updat�d th� I�� on his contacts with the Grand Rapids grou�. <br />56 <br />57 City Manager Malinen reviewed his research on on-line diversity training opportunities for City <br />58 staff based on his review of various modules, past experience and use of the modules, ar�d in <br />59 consideration of staff time and the cost-effectiveness of training. <br />b0 <br />bl <br />b2 <br />b3 <br />b4 <br />65 <br />Discussion included length of training; POS'T Board certification for Police Officers as part of <br />their continuing education requiremcnts; rationale for the Grand Rapids two days training; <br />previous training by the HRC; consideration for specialized peer training for the Police and how <br />to involve the community in such an opportunity. <br />66 Discussion included the importance of group dynamics to determine whether training would be <br />67 beneficial; intent of training, whether specific to the Police Department from a positive <br />68 perspective or from a perceived need; support from Police Chief Carol Sletner based on the <br />69 department's overall training requirements, shifts, and budget considerations; and the need for <br />7Q cultural awareness and sensitivity for the entire organization. <br />71 <br />72 Discussion included accommodation of shifts for City employees, specifically Police Officers; <br />73 cornmunity involvernent through a forum; advantages of personal interaction versus online <br />74 training opportunities; assistance from other agencies and the Attorney Gencral's Office; and <br />75 possible vendor participation. <br />7G <br />77 <br />78 <br />79 <br />80 <br />Sl <br />82 <br />Chair Delmore volunteered to contact Chaska Police on their experiences with diversity training. <br />Conuiussioner Venters noted other considerations to be incorporated and volunteered to continue <br />discussions with Police Chief Sletner, � an attempt to build the trust between the HRC and <br />Police Department and agreed to work wi#h City Manager Malinen, as applicable. <br />83 Comtnissioner McKenzie reiterated her interest in seeing the Police Officer training involve <br />84 group interaction with their peers and community to provide a better dynat�nic, due to the nature <br />SS of the Officer's job in confronting people in sometimes unpieasant circumstances. <br />86 <br />87 <br />SS <br />89 <br />90 <br />91 <br />Commissioner Oftelie sought a nnore thorough review of the Grand Rapids training curriculum. <br />Commissioner Venters volunteered to forward packet materials to individual Commissioners as <br />well as City Manager Malinen. <br />
