attached) to widen the circle of influence and to increase the RHRC's role in fighting <br />racism in the community. <br />The RHRC will work with �dgerton Elementary School, part of the Roseville Area <br />Schools System. The Principal is John Ahern. Edgerton is a Kindergarten to 6`h grade <br />building with students (425, last year's enrallment number} fram ages 5 to 12. Edgerton <br />is the most diverse elementary in the distnct, with 41.fi% of thc student body being <br />students of color (according to 2�01-2002} statistics. <br />The breakdown in racial grougs is as follows: <br />American Indian 1 _S% <br />Asian/Pacific Tslander 21.6% <br />Hispanic 5.5% <br />Biack not Hispanic t2.7% <br />White not Hispanic 58.4°/a <br />The RHRC has held preliminary discussions with Illusion Theater which has extensive <br />experience working with children in an educational setting to develop and produce <br />theater presentations on a variety of issues. <br />In addition to formal working relationships, the RHRC wi�l collaborate with other human <br />rights groups including the Human Rights Rcsource Center (www.hrusa._ QI.�) for <br />assistance in developing a school curriculum for an elementary schooi. The Human <br />Rights Resource Center has several frce curricula that address human rights issues. <br />Currently, none of the curricula uses theater as a method for teaching children about <br />racism. <br />The RHRC wi�l work with the local cable aceess consortium (CTV) to tape the second <br />play. The production will be shown on Roseville's Cable Channel 16 and CTV 15, and <br />the tape will be available ta other schools and groups interested in discussing issues of <br />racism. CTV is a non-profit consortium #hat provides public access programming to 10 <br />suburban cities. City staff will work with CTV staff to tape the performance. <br />COMMUNITY IMPACT <br />The RHRC believes ihe project will impact our community on three levels — Classroorrt, <br />Educational System and Communzty. <br />• In the classroom, st�adents and teachers will directly deal with and tliscuss issues <br />of racism_ Students will work with professional actors to develop a play or a <br />series of vignettes that discusses the impact of racism on a school and community_ <br />��� <br />Human Righis Commissiort <br />St Panl Foundation <br />Creating an An4-Racist Comnturuty Grant Application <br />Page 2 of 5 <br />
