• This project will encourage the Educational System to address issues of racism. <br />The teachers and actors along with advice from Commission members will create <br />a curriculum that addresses racism. The RHRC will promote the cuzriculum in <br />the Roseville Area School District and in other school districts outside of <br />Roseville_ <br />Other students, parents artd �-eater Roseville community will benefit from this <br />project. Parents and other students will hear about and see the initial play. This <br />wili open opportunities for discussions about racism. In addition, members ofthe <br />community will be invited to the play that is develo�ed in the fall. Following the <br />production, the RHRC wi11 lead discussions about the messages in the <br />play/vignettes and about issues of racism in the community_ <br />PROGRAM <br />The RHRC will work directly with (na�ne of school) and a local theater to get students to <br />write and perform a pIay that adc�resses issues of racism that students either experienced <br />themselves or have seen in the community. We plan to work with the school throngi�out <br />the year 2003, so that two classrooms of students will create two separate plays, ane in <br />Spring 2003 and one in FaII 2003_ In the Spnng 2Q03 we will work with the teacher(s) <br />and the theater cornpany to develop a curriculum thal can be used in future years. <br />Students will then perform the play for fellow students and parents. <br />In Fa1120Q3 we will again work with the teachers and theater company to refine the <br />curriculu�n and to get a new cIassroom of students to write a new play addressing issues <br />of racism. 5tndents vvili perform this play for feilow students, parents and members of <br />the community. Following the community perfornnance, Human Rights Commission <br />mem�ers will hold roundtable discussions for anyone who wants to discuss issues in <br />more detail. � <br />The RHRC believes that racial opinions and community attitudes are learned and by <br />reaching children and youth we can he�p youngsters to think about racism, to question <br />their attitudes and those of the community and to counter misconceptions that are <br />perpetuaEed through the media or heard in the community. <br />By producing two plays in two classrooms, our own Commission members will leatn <br />more how our youth interpret events and the world around them.
