Media relations <br />RFD must pay special attention to our relationship with the media. The media can <br />solidify our standing in the community or deslroy the confidence of citizens in the <br />department. There must be a cozanprehensive plan to maa�iznize positive publicity and <br />reduce negative stories. The primary means of accomplishing this goal is through service <br />excellence. After executing our services with excellence, there must be a coordinated <br />approach to articulate the accomplishments of the department. <br />Objectives <br />• Develop and implement programs to promote safety in the community. <br />• Develop and implement programs to involve the media in fire department <br />activities, educating them with first-hand experiences of our excellent scrvice. <br />• Develop and implement programs to conduct training to facilitate media access to <br />newsworthy evcnts and ensure their safcty in the hazard zone. <br />• Develop and im�lement a program to survey the media concerning their <br />rclationship to RFD. <br />• Develop and implement a program to train RFD officers and our Public <br />Information Officer in rnedia relations and the promotion of the department. <br />• Develop and irnpleznent a program to cctively pzomote our use new technologies <br />and programs that we offer that enhance service to the community. <br />Action Plan <br />AP 6.27 Administration Division will promote seasonal fire sa�ety messages and new <br />technologies of the fire service to the media. It will be our goal to have a minimum of 30 <br />published or aired press releases annually. PRIORITY 3. <br />AP b.28 Administration Division will evaluate the feasibility of conducting a program to <br />educate journalists on fire operations and fireground safety, yielding a"Certified Fire <br />Journalist" designation. PRIORITY 5. <br />AP 5.29 Adzxzinistration Division will host an annual meeting with representatives frozn <br />the media in the city to determine if RFD is providing satisfactory se�rvice for their needs. <br />PRIORITY 5. <br />AP 6.30 Training Division will conduct training annually to enhance media relations and <br />public perception for all members. PRIOR[TY 5. <br />AP 6.31 PIE Division will provide the media with quarterly public service <br />announcements on fire safety topics.
