Health and Safety Pian
6.3 Lifting
It is Iikely that heavy barrels will need to be moved from the sort tables to the scale
and then to a disposal area and that materials will need to be shoveied onto the tables.
Sorters are reqnired to be able to lift 25 pounds to apply for the positian. Every effort
has been taken to lessen the likelihood of a back injury because of the nature of Ehe
work, but every individual vill need to keep iheir own health in mind. If a sorter has a
previous back injury or if a barrel is too heavy to roll or slide, a dolly will be used, or
someone else will be asked to move it. When shoveling materials onto the tabletop,
sorters wili he remindcd not to Ioad thc shovel with more weight than they can
comfortably lift.
The %llowing tips wzll be used when lifting:
Maintain the tlaree natural curves of the spine by keeping the head high, chin
tucked in, and back arched.
Bend Iups and lrnees.
Use the diagonal lift (oue foot ahead, one foot behind} to get the weight in
close and maintain a wide, balanced base of support.
Keep abdominal muscles tight when lifting to help support the back.
Keep the load clos to the body and stand up straight. Keep head up.
Avoid twisting while lifl:ing. Pivot after lifting, if changing direcfion.
Avoid lifting anything heavy above the shoulders.
7. Procedure for Handing Hazardous Vllastes
The materials composztion study proceduze has been designed so that sorters are not
exposcd to materials that have not first been screened for hazardous, household
hazardous, or infectious waste. These xnaterials are briefly defined and appropriatc
act7ons outlined for each in the following:
7.' Hazardous
Hazardous: Materials that wcre improperly disposed of in municipal waste or
recyclable materials; e.g., radioactive waste, toxic chemicals, explosives.
Action: If 1:he presortezs should miss a hazardous item in a materials sampie and it is
brought to the sorting table and found, work should immediateiy stop and tiie area
shouId be cleared. The entire sample will be rejected and removed and, depending
upon 1:he nature of the hazardous item, the site coordinator will see to the proper
disposal action or will call the appropriate emergency agency.
b R.
