HRA Meeting
Minutes – Tuesday, May 15, 2012
Page 9
1
Member Quam opined that the language to a “vibrant” community had meaning, and provided
2
an emotional appeal not currently found in the current Mission Statement; and was an active
3
thing that could serve to draw people in when they hear it.
4
5
Member Lee opined that Roseville was not just different, but was and should be at the
6
forefront, through innovation, responsiveness and inclusiveness.
7
8
Member Quam opined that this was what she liked about the “Living Smarter, Living Greener”
9
campaign; opining that it was at the forefront of where Roseville is at and where people want
10
to go, providing a unique quality. Member Quam questioned if the Strategic Plan was
11
intended to be internal or external.
12
13
Ms. Raye recognized the desire for members to provide more emotional appeal, beyond the
14
bread and butter.
15
16
Ms. Raye further questioned:
17
18
If the Roseville HRA did its work well, what does Roseville look like in terms of impacts to
19
the community and businesses?
20
21
Member Majerus opined “it’s alive!”
22
23
Chair Maschka opined “it’s interesting!”
24
25
Ms. Raye restated that as the previously used “vibrant.”
26
27
Member Quam opined that it held a mix of generations.
28
29
Ms. Raye suggested that it may be a “demographically represented community that is active
30
and engaged, with access to affordable housing and places (assets) that build community.
31
32
Member Quam expressed support for that statement, with housing serving as the backbone.
33
34
Member Majerus opined that Roseville was a crossroads, as a first-ring suburb, it offered
35
something unique.
36
37
Member Quam opined that Roseville provided a small community feel with vibrancy in a
38
larger world, and was easily-accessed to both metropolitan communities.
39
40
Chair Maschka opined that “Roseville is the real center of the metro area.”
41
42
Ms. Raye asked:
43
44
How important is that partnership with the community to the mission, not just internally, but
45
with developers and business leaders; with the HRA being about partnerships?
46
47
Consensus of Members was that it was probably #1.
48
49
Chair Maschka noted that the City had a history of strong partnerships, opining that the Dale
50
Street project may test that partnership potential. Chair Maschka suggested that Ms. Raye and
51
staff draft a Mission Statement from comments so far for another review by the HRA Board.
52
53
Ms. Kelsey noted that, while hearing comments about housing and a sense of community, if
54
the HRA’s intent was to delve into economic development and business, she had yet to hear
55
any of those comments in the Mission Statement.
