Human Rights Commission Minutes
March 20, 2013 — Draft Minutes
47
48 Commissioner Brisbois agreed, noting the reception location worked well.
49
5o Proposed Process for 2014 Student Essay Contest: Commissioner Groff questioned if a word
51 or page limit was set on the essay contest. Ms. Curti stated at this time, the only requirement was
52 that the essay not be longer than three pages.
53
54 Commissioner poneen suggested a word limit and recommended font size be set in the
55 requirements for 2014. She then reviewed a proposed essay contest scoring process for the HRC
56 to consider for next year. The new system would assure there was equity between both middle
57 schools while also having a diversity of essay topics within the semi-finalists. She then requested
58 comments or questions from the Commissioners.
59
6o Vice Chair Brisbois indicated she awarded three or four perfect scores on the essays this year,
61 and her number one essay ended up in sixth place. She suggested while the scoring was being
62 completed that the Commissioners also rank their top three essays.
63
64
65
66
67
68
69
70
Commissioner poneen agreed with this recommendation stating the rubric could be amended to
add this fourth dimension.
Commissioner Becker was in favor of amending the rubric and suggested originality be placed
on the spectrum. Commissioner poneen commented this was within the rubric and was a
component of the analysis piece.
71 Chair Grefenberagreed with Commissioner Becker. He was also'^'°r°""''° ^+
72 concerned that the top three finalists have to cover °°°^*^ ^ separate-topics. He suggested
73 instead that this be more flexible to onlv require two out of the three finalists have ag
74 different topic. He also recommended the term "categories" be removed from the essay contest
75 rules.-
76
77 Commissioner poneen indicated this ga€ provision could read the essay was to address
78 human rights issues and concerns and the HRC would wark to have the two middle schools be
79 €alrepresented in the finalists. Ms. Curti added that in the past she s-had sought essays
8o from home schooled youth as well. She indicated another option for next year would be to
81 collect the essays from each teacher to assure there was a fair representation of each classroom.
82 She stated in the past six middle school teachers have submitted essays.
83
84 Ms. Curti explained another option far the grading process would be to seelc comments or
85 recommendations from the teachers on the current rubric. Vice Chair Brisbois agreed with this
86 suggestion.
87
88 Chair Grefenberg recommended that the number of honorable mentions not be limited
89 to two entries. Commissioner poneen agreed _*' *' r°mm°ra*;r and s-added
90 that a representative from each class could be selected for next year.
91
