RR1
1V
Upcoming Water Main Maintenance
The majority of the city's drinking water system was
originally constructed in the 1950's and 1960's,
utilizing cast iron pipe. In the 1970's, the pipe
materials used changed from cast iron to ductile
iron. This older cast iron infrastructure is nearing
the end of its useful life and these pipes are
becoming more brittle and prone to breaks. A
water main break can be both disruptive and costly.
As seen in recent stories from St. Paul and
Minneapolis, the break can result in water outages
for homes and businesses and, in some drastic
cases, cause property damage. On average, we
experience 30 water main breaks in Roseville every
year. As these pipes continue to age, the number
of breaks will continue to increase
New advancements in the water industry have
allowed cities to begin evaluating and using
trenchless methods of water main rehabilitation as
a viable alternative to open -cut, pipe replacement
for some projects. This technology essentially
installs a new pipe inside the existing water main
without the need to dig up city streets, which results
in minimal disruption to residents and the traveling
public during construction. The new pipe is a
structural improvement that can extend the service
life of the existing water main by 50 years. We
expect that projects using this technology will
eventually be programmed annually for the
foreseeable future as our infrastructure continues to
age.
Project Location
City staff has identified two segments in your
neighborhood to include in a 2013 rehabilitation
project that have a significant history of water main
breaks:
PHASE 1: Rice Street, from south of
Transit Avenue to County Road C -2, has
had 8 water main breaks since 2000
PHASE 2: Transit Avenue, from Western
Avenue to Rice Street, has had 10 water
main breaks since 2000
A project map can be found on the City's website:
www.citvofroseville.com/WaterRehab
Attachment B
Water Main Lining
Project- Rice Street
Project Schedule- PHASE 1
The Contractor for this project, Veit and
Companies, Inc., will begin preparing for Phase
1 of the project this week. They will set up the
temporary water system and bring their
equipment out to the site. Veit anticipates
connecting the temporary water system the
This photo shows a typical access pit that you can
expect to see on the project. These pits will be
barricaded off to protect residents and the traveling
public from the construction site.
The work on the Rice Street water main is
anticipated to last about three weeks from the time
the Contractor starts the lining work to time the
access pits are restored.
-r you oncerns, or
comments please contact us at 651- 792 -7003
between 8 am and 4:30 pm.
Throughout the project, we will keep you
informed through monthly direct mailings and
weekly updates on the project website.
After Hours
If an issue arises outside of regular business
hours, contact the City's 24 -hour non -
emergency number at 651- 767 -0640.
ALWAYS CALL 911 FOR EMERGENCIES.
