Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />September 18, 2013 <br />Page 7 of 9 <br />Chair Grefenberg moved and Commissioner Becker seconded a motion to recommend the HRC <br />pursue hosting a naturalization ceremony that would recognize immigrant communities in the <br />Roseville area that will become US citizens. Motion passed unanimously. <br />(Commissioner Thao excused herself from the meeting at 7:56 p.m.) <br />Chair Grefenberg recommended the Commissioner authorize up to, but no more than $325 for a <br />dinner to thank the Civic Engagement Task Force. <br />Commissioner Groff wanted to be assured that there would be a good turnout. Commissioner <br />Singleton was in favor of the event, but recommended the amount spent on this event be <br />lowered. <br />Chair Grefenberg understood this concern but anticipated the Civic Engagement Task Force <br />wanted to see this discussion happen. Commissioners discussed when the City Council would <br />take action on the Task Force recommendations. <br />Ms. Curti said she did not think the Council would take action before January or February of <br />2014. <br />Chair Grefenberg stated he would use his discernment in planning this event to sure that the <br />expense was kept manageable. <br />Chair Grefenberg moved and Commissioner Becker seconded a motion to authorize up to, but no <br />more than $175 for an appreciation event to thank with the Civic Engagement Task Force <br />provided that there is significant interest on the part of said task force members. Motion passed <br />unanimously. <br />Assessment of Council Feedback from August 12 Joint Meeting <br />Discussion: Chair Grefenberg reviewed the council members' comments made at the August 12 <br />joint Council meeting with the Commission. He was pleased with the appreciation of the HRC <br />expressed by the Council. He requested comments from the Commission members that attended <br />the Council meeting. <br />Commissioner Courneya found the Council to be very appreciative of the work being completed <br />by the HRC, along with the proposed work plan for 2014. She stated there was some concern as <br />to the number of commissions the City should have along with the number of members on each <br />commission. She thought there was consensus that Civic Engagement and Human Rights were <br />both huge issues, and that a great deal of work was being done by the HRC at this time. She <br />indicated that she could not discern any consensus on the Council regarding whether there should <br />be a Civic Engagement Commission separate from the HRC. <br />Commissioner Groff added that he also did not hear agreement by the Council on the Civic <br />Engagement and Human Rights committee issues.
