Yea,....long study could give city real downtown

ANN BAKER STAFF WRITER

While RoseviUe is a place its residents praise to the skies, it is
missing one central component, and that is causing movers and
shakers in the 50~year-old city to consider a serious makeover.

What's coming next for the first.ring, car-driven, postwar suburb
- home to the world's first Target store and Minnesota's first
McDonald's, not to mention an aging, contented. populace - is a
real downtown.

It could be an old-fashioned brick plaza with tal1 buildings,
fountains, outdoor markets and celebrations that attract crowds
of pigeons and people.

That was an image set before Roseville's City Center Task Force
this week as the 13~member group launched a year-long
exploration of ways to reshape a mile~wide area flanking County
Road C and Lexington Avenue into a concentrated residential.
commercial-entertainment hub. The task force will issue its
findings to the City Council.

The coWlciJ wants to encourage redevelopment in the area
between HamIine Avenue and just past Victoria Street that
includes City Hall, John Rose Oval, Veterans Park, Central Par~
RoseviUe Mobile Home Park and several blocks of single~fami1y
homes. It also includes Lexington Avenue running south to
Minnesota 36 and the public righto{)f~way along its edges.

The conversation Thursday was sprinkled with words like
"urban," "main street" and "small town," as participants named
their favorite cities beyond home. Lois Sinn Lindquist picked
Quebec. Craig Klausing chose Lanesboro. Other favorites
included San Francisco, Vail and New Yark. All were cities with
a downtown, walking areas and places to meet people.

RosevilJe developed as one of those corridors that people
followed as they left the central cities, planning consultant Kim
Way told the group. Its lack of a center raises the question

In1"n12.htm&NS-query=Rosevine&NS-search.type=NS~bootean.query&NS-collection=Pio 1 0/12/98
