From the Baltimore harbor to a new plaza in
the Chicago suburb of Southfield, Ill., he said, they demonstrate
several points that he wants the Roseville task force to keep in
mind. He summarized them as "streetscapes, plazas. parks and
promenades."

"It's mixed uses that really makes it a place,u he said. "It starts
with people, It starts with new types of housing, probably not
single-family-detached, a higher density, probably apartments,
condos, maybe some townhouses. Next, a high-quality park.
Restaurants are a logical next step, entertainment, arts, A lot of
centers become places of businesses. They also need access for cars;
several developments that tried to ban cars failed and had to be
redesigned. Some of the most successful new city centers have
multi-story buildings with shops and restaurants on the street,
offices above them and apartments on top. Several have
beautifully screened parking ramps.

..
