'S c. d,...t, c.1-

Sign Setbacks:

30 feet

PRINCIPLES BEHIND EXISTING ORDINANCE:

There are a number of basic principles behind the City's current regulations regarding signs
in business districts.

The first principle is that size of a sign is related to type of use. B-1, and B-IB businesses are
typically smaller businesses, thus they are allowed smaller signs. B-2, B-3, and Shopping
Center businesses are larger and more land intensive, thus they are permitted more signage.

The second principle is that wall signage is related to building size. A large wall can "absorb"
more signage than a small wall, thus wall signs are regulated as a percentage of wall size. In
other words, building mass determines the amount of wall signage.

The third principle involves the street that the business fronts upon. Larger signs are
allowed on roads with higher speeds and 4 or more lanes. This is because at faster speeds, a
larger sign is needed in order to get the attention of a passenger in an automobile.

PROBLEMS WITH THESE TYPES OF SIGNS IN ROSEVILLE:

Too many of these signs
The size of many of these signs are too large
These signs produce clutter

POSSffiLE SOLUTIONS:

Solution #1

Assign a total amount of square footage per street frontage for each type of use. The
business can decide where the allowed square footage would go, however, square footage
would be limited if it is place on a pylon sign. See Table below.
