Ft.
25' high

For instance a business in a B-2 District would be allowed 300 square feet of signage per
street frontage. The business could place this square footage in wall signs, ground signs, or
pylon signs. However, if a pylon sign is chosen, only one would be allowed and it could only
be 100 square feet, thus taking 200 square feet of the total sign square footage (both sides of
the pylon sign would be counted). A business could distribute wall and ground sign area in
any way that is deemed appropriate.

Principle Behind Solution #1

Many times it is the total amount of signage on a site that can seem excessive, not a
particular wall, pylon or ground sign. This solution allows a finite amount of sign age per
street frontage, with the details of how large each sign left to the business owner. However,
as a disincentive to large pylon signs, restrictions are placed on the size of these signs. By
counting both sides of the pylon sign towards the total sign area allowed, two-thirds (50 % in
SC district) of available sign area is used up on a pylon sign.

No restrictions are placed on the amount of wall or ground signs as long the total is not
greater than the maximum allowed for that district.

Solution #2

In order to better regulate the placement of pylon signs, a pylon sign setback band should be
created. This setback band establishes both maximum and minimum setbacks for placement
of a sign, thus, allowing a restricted area where pylon signs may be placed. The minimum
setback would be 20 feet, while the maximum setback would be 40 feet.
